What Is a Data Warehouse?

A data warehouse is the central analytical store where data from many operational systems is consolidated, cleaned, and modeled for analysis — the durable home of history. Modern warehouses (and their lakehouse cousins) receive extracts or streams from ERP, storefronts, fulfillment, and marketing systems, reshape them into analytical models, and serve business intelligence tools, data science, and reporting.

Why it matters

The warehouse is where questions about patterns get answered: cohort behavior, seasonality, margin trends, the effect of last quarter's pricing change. It provides the single analytical history that operational systems, which overwrite their own state constantly, cannot. Every serious metric lineage program eventually runs through warehouse transformations, because that is where definitions are encoded.

What it is not

A warehouse is not an operations room. Its data arrives on pipeline schedules, its models optimize for query flexibility rather than case handling, and it has no concept of an exception owner.
